Chronicle of the hotel

The Gabler was mentioned in documents - although it was known by another name - as early as 1429. A certain Peter Zeysar was the "pirprew" (beer brewer) at the time.

In the 19th century the building passed to the ownership of the Franz Mayr family.

It was purchased by the Austrian Brau AG in 1930, who carried on the tradition of brewing beer together with the Kaltenhausen brewery near Hallein.

The photo shows the Gablerbräu around 1908. Its former owner, Franz Mayr, father of the famous opera singer Richard Mayr, can be seen standing on the corner of the building.

The Gablerbräu (lower left photo) in 1910: The small square on the corner of the Linzer Gasse/Priesterhausgasse in front of the Gablerbräu (now called the Cornelius Reitsamer Square) was paved for the first time. The steps leading up to the Kapuzinerberg can be seen in the background.

Richard Mayr (October 18, 1877 - December 1, 1935), the famous bass celebrated on every stage of the world, was born in the building. His "Ochs von Lerchenau" from the Rosenkavalier by Richard Strauss or his "Rocco" in Beethoven's Fidelio are still considered the measure of musical genius.
The memorial plaque on the front of the building (photo on upper right) and the dining room in the Gablerbräu bearing his name, decorated with personal memorabilia, commemorate one of Salzburg's great sons.

The Gablerbräu has been a place for encounters between the locals and guests for many centuries. The Linzer Gasse - and the Steingasse - once served as the main junction for trade between north and south. Merchants, coachmen and travelers planned their journeys so that they could spend the night in Salzburg. The Gablerbräu was always a welcome place to stop, especially since the hotel not only offered a warm bed and a hearty meal but also served fresh beer from the restaurant's own brewery, something out of the ordinary in those days. Although numerous inns had established themselves in Salzburg, only a few were permitted to proudly call themselves "Braugasthof."
